What tasks does your job include? What do you love about your job the most?

My job includes tasks like sampling blood, receiving bloods, sputum and urine from patients and doctors, adding add-on tests to existing samples, and calling nurses and doctors for further or missing information. This can mean working in different sections of the hospital.

Being a trainee Pathology Assistance requires a high level of attention to detail in a very fast paced environment – so staying calm and focused is important as mistakes can be costly.

I love everything I do in the lab, whether it’s an easy or more challenging task. I also really like the people I work with – they have helped me to understand how procedures are undertaken.

What was your study journey to get this job?

I was offered the opportunity to apply for this Traineeship through my school. I wasn’t confident but was encouraged by a teacher in the VET Office.

The process involved writing a resume and cover letter to the employer, which I had never done before. I attended an information session presented by the employer at my school. It was here I gained an initial understanding of pathology and what my traineeship would be like and potential career options for the future.

I also attended a Pathology Inspirations Day at Royal Brisbane Hospital, where I completed a Harrison Assessment questionnaire (I scored 93.1% suitability for a Pathology Assistant!) At the Inspirations Day, we received lots of information about Pathology Queensland and what a trainee pathology assistant does. I really enjoyed the experience, particularly the tour of the Central Laboratory.

Two weeks after I found out I was one of three students selected for the traineeship, I attended a traineeship sign-up and information session with my family. This is where I was given my uniform.

I am now enrolled in Certificate III in Pathology Assistance, which I complete in my own time. I work in a hospital pathology laboratory one day each week, taking one day off school. I have 375 hours of paid work placement to complete.

I love earning money in my first job and learning new things every day. My qualification will help me to achieve my future career goals. My parents are very proud of me (more than I am proud of myself!) and my relatives from all around the world know about my accomplishment.

What are your future plans for work and study?

My future plan is to become an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon. This is a decision I have come to since I started my traineeship. I haven’t completed the required subjects to go straight from high school to university and so my plan is to complete my Certificate III traineeship and then a Diploma level qualification after I finish school. I will then work towards a university degree in medicine. Although it will take longer, I will eventually get there and make everyone very proud.

My Certificate III in Pathology Assistance will allow me to get a part time job while I’m studying at TAFE and university to pay the required fees.

What is one thing about your study and/or job that you would love to share with people considering this career?

To students like me who want to start their career at a younger age, I recommend you look out for opportunities like Traineeship and Apprenticeships through your school VET Office. These programs can be the start of your career, giving you skills and a qualification for your future. For me, it has been the start of my dream!
